Culture of Opera Buffa in Mozart`s Vienna

Culture of Opera Buffa in Mozart`s Vienna
Mozart`s comic operas are among the masterworks of Western civilization, 'italian opera' and yet the musical environment in which Mozart 'italian opera' and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte wrote these now-popular operas has received little critical attention. In this richly detailed book, Mary Hunter offers a sweeping, synthetic view of opera buffa in the lively theatrical world of late-eighteenth-century Vienna. Opera buffa (Italian-language comic opera) persistently entertained audiences at a time when Joseph was striving for a German national theater. Hunter attributes opera buffa`s success to its ability to provide sheer pleasure 'italian opera' and hence explores how the genre functioned as entertainment. She argues that opera buffa, like mainstream film today, projects a social world both recognizable 'italian opera' and distinct from reality. It raises important issues while containing them in the merely entertaining frame of the occasion, as well as presenting them as a series of easily identifiable dramatic 'italian opera' and musical conventions. Exploring nearly eighty comic operas, Hunter shows how the arias 'italian opera' and ensembles convey a multifaceted picture of the repertory`s social values 'italian opera' and habits. In a concluding chapter, she discusses Cosm fan tutte as a work profoundly concerned with the conventions of its repertory 'italian opera' and with the larger idea of convention itself 'italian opera' and reveals the ways Mozart 'italian opera' and da Ponte pointedly converse with their immediate contemporaries. Italian opera - Italian opera can be divided into three periods, the Baroque, the Romantic and the modern. The Baroque appeared first, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, and approximately 200 years later, the Romantic.

Opera seria - Opera seria is an Italian musical term which refers to the noble and 'serious' style of Italian opera that predominated in Europe from the 1720s to ca 1770. The only popular rival to opera seria was opera buffa, the 'comic' opera that took its cue from the improvisatory commedia dell'arte.

British opera - British opera is opera which was composed either in Britain or by a composer of British nationality. Although not often granted masterpiece status (with the exception of Dido and Aeneas) in comparison to Italian or German opera, British opera is usually distinguished by beautiful music and formalized structure.

Comic opera - The term comic opera causes inevitable confusion when it comes to definitions. The term is a translation of the Italian opera buffa.
