The primary opera composer of the Baroque Period, German-born G.F. Handel is best known for his Christmas season classic, MESSIAH. Though this religious masterwork overshadows everything else he did, his secular operas -- mostly stories of love 'baroque opera' and betrayal -- are enduring 'baroque opera' and brilliant works as well. ARIODANTE tells the story of a Scottish princess who is accused on cheating on her future husband. This 1996 production, directed by David Alden, is performed beautifully by the acclaimed English National Opera. Christoph Willibald Gluck - Orfeo& Euridice (DVD)

ORFEO& EURIDICE was a remarkable, influential, 'baroque opera' and revolutionary opera in multiple ways, demonstrative of many of the things that made Christoph Willibald Gluck a great composer. Eschewing the Baroque propensity toward over-ornamentation 'baroque opera' and stiff formality at the expense of dramatic flow. He wanted greatly to allow the poetry to shine through in the music, not be drowned out by superfluous pomp. Also manifesting a French influence, which Gluck wanted to meld with Italian opera, the work breaks down the traditional barriers between recitative 'baroque opera' and aria. Nonetheless, ORFEO& EURIDICE unfolds on a grand scale, employing choruses of shades 'baroque opera' and furies that contrast with Orfeo's earthly search for Euridice. The opera that largely heralded the end of the Baroque era is still widely performed, often as a ballet, 'baroque opera' and is often depicted on a much grander, more elaborate scale, as seen in this lavish interpretation.
